Death toll from China’s quake climbs to 19, with 343 others injured

At least 19 people have been killed and 343 injured as result of a 7.0-magnitutde quake that struck China’s southwestern Sichuan province on Tuesday, according to the preliminary count reported by the Chinese authorities on Wednesday.

The epicenter of the quake lies in the Jiuzhaigou County, a popular tourist attraction that sees thousands of visitors every day.

Among the casualties were at least eight tourists, Xinhua reported.

Thirteen people were critically injured. Following the quake, over 50,000 tourists, including 126 foreign nationals, were evacuated to safety, the authorities said.
