Coptic Church of Egypt refused to accept Pence because of Jerusalem

The Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt refused to accept US Vice President Michael Pens, who should visit Cairo in the near future, because of Washington’s position on Jerusalem, the Patriarchate said in a statement.

The official representative of the Coptic Church explained that “this step was a response to the decision of the US administration on Jerusalem, which does not take into account the feelings of millions of Arab residents.”

On Friday, Ahmad al-Teiib, the head of the largest in the Sunni world of the Egyptian Islamic University Al-Azhar, also refused to meet with US Vice President Pence because of Washington’s position on Jerusalem. In “Al-Azhar” they stressed that they will not talk to those who “falsify history, infringe on the rights of peoples and attack their shrines.”

President of the United States Donald Trump on Wednesday announced the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Trump also signed a document on the transfer of the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

In response, Sheikh Al-Azhar announced the urgent convening of an international conference on Jerusalem with the participation of the largest Ulema in the Islamic world and prominent Christian figures, interested international and regional organizations to discuss practical steps to support the Palestinians.
