UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Analyzing the concentration of benzoylecgonine, a molecule found in the urine of cocaine users, in the underground wastewater systems of several European cities, researchers from the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction have identified the city where this narcotic is the most consumed.
The British city of Bristol has been designated the new European capital of cocaine, after experts have discovered in its sewage system the highest level of benzoylecgonine, a molecule formed by the liver of cocaine users and eliminated in the urine.
According to researchers at the European Monitoring Center for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA), the average daily benzoylecgonine concentration in Bristol sewage was 969.2 mg per 1,000 inhabitants in 2018, up from 754,7 mg of the previous year. With 932.4 mg, second place belongs to Amsterdam, which is followed by Zurich (856.0 mg), Antwerp (771.8 mg) and Barcelona (733.2 mg).
