UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) – China will launch a satellite in space that will take over the task of an “artificial moon” and will reflect the sun’s light on the ground.

According to the Xinhua news agency, the satellite to be built in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, will be completed by 2020 and will carry giant mirrors to convey sunlight to the ground.

From this satellite called “Artificial moon”, three will be produced while planned in 2022 to be sent to space.

The Chairman of the System Research Institute in this city, Wu Chunfeng, said all satellite works will be completed in 2020.

He said that satellites will be fitted with giant mirrors with which 24 hours of continuous lighting will be provided.

Wu added that the light that will be reflected from the sun to the earth will illuminate an area of 3,600 to 6,400 square kilometers. According to him, the intensity of the radiation is expected to be 8 times brighter than that of the moon.

“The artificial moon will be placed in an orbit at a distance of 500 kilometers from the planet earth,” Wu said, indicating that the intensity of light could be adjusted and that humans could see it as a star in the sky.

Wu drew attention to the fact that the “artificial moon” in question will be used especially in the civilian field, and will enable savings of 1.2 billion yuan if it illuminates an area of 50 square kilometers.

Earlier, Russia had works as far as the “artificial moon” was concerned, but because of the technical problems it did not succeed.
