CHINA (VOP TODAY NEWS) – China has strongly opposed the US plan to sell military equipment to Taiwan to equip F-16 fighters and other military aircraft worth $ 330 million.
This came at a press conference held by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Jiang Shuang Tuesday in Beijing, commenting on Washington’s announcement to approve the sale of military equipment to Taiwan.
“We are deeply disturbed by the US plan to sell arms to Taiwan, and we firmly oppose it,” the foreign ministry spokesman said.
He pointed out that the sale of weapons by the United States to Taiwan is a serious violation of international law, saying that “this situation harms China’s sovereign rights and national interests.”
He called on Washington to comply with relevant treaties between China and the United States, abolish the said arms sales plan and cut military contacts with Taiwan “so as not to harm bilateral relations.”
Taiwan is an inalienable part of China and no one can undermine the territorial integrity of China and Beijing’s will to defend its national sovereignty, he said.
Earlier in the day, the Pentagon announced that the administration of President Donald Trump had approved the sale of $ 330 million worth of military equipment to Taiwan.
According to the National Defense Authorization Act of 2019, passed by the US Senate in early August, joint military exercises with Taiwan will be expanded and military and non-military meetings will be expanded.
The United States continues its informal relations with Taiwan, although it recognizes China’s political power over it, with Washington selling billions of dollars of weapons and military equipment annually to Taiwan.
Taiwan is a central issue for China, as the latter rejects any attempts by independence supporters to rid the island of China, and Beijing asserts that it will not hesitate to protect its regional security and sovereignty.
