UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Hong Kong is now at a “critical stage” after continued anti-government protests, the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office said on Monday, stressing the need to stop violence there.
Yang Kwang, spokesman for the office, delivered a speech on Monday, expressing support for the police’s handling of the protests. “Those who care about the city should declare their rejection of violence,” he said.
Hong Kong is plagued by its worst political crisis in decades, two months after protests continue to be marred by increasingly violent violence, posing the biggest challenge to Chinese President Xi Jinping since he took office in 2012.
The protests began against a bill to hand over people accused of criminal cases to China for trial, but have now developed into wider dissatisfaction with the local city government and Beijing’s central government.
