CHINA (VOP TODAY NEWS) — China on Monday criticized US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for accusing Beijing of prolonging the crisis in Venezuela, describing his remarks as “lies.”
Beijing is one of Venezuela’s most prominent lenders and maintains ties with the government of President Nicolas Maduro, which is also supported by Russia.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said that the US Secretary of State “has flattered” relations between China and Latin American countries with “all recklessness”, pointing out that Washington regards the region as its “backyard”.
“For a while, American politicians have been repeating the same rhetoric by insulting China all over the world, fueling and sowing discord everywhere.”
“Their words and actions are despicable, and lies are lies, even if they have been repeated a thousand times, Mr. Pompeo, you can stop that.”
The Chinese condemnation of the response to Pompeo’s speech in Chile came on Friday, where the latter said Beijing’s “financing” of the Maduro system “contributed to the aggravation and prolongation of the crisis” in Venezuela.
Pompeo wrapped up his four-nation South American tour to the Colombian city of Cucuta, which is a transit point for the thousands of Venezuelans who have fled the crisis in their country.
During the visit, Maduro called for opening the border to humanitarian aid. He also stressed US calls for Maduro to resign. Washington and dozens of other countries have recognized Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guido as Venezuela’s legitimate president.
