UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — China on Monday accused Canadian citizen Michael Kufrij of stealing state secrets handed over to another Canadian detainee, Michael Spafur, which is likely to increase tensions between Ottawa and Beijing.
Spavor, a businessman who had business relations with North Korea and Kufri, a former diplomat, was detained by Chinese authorities in early December shortly after Meng Wanzhu, financial director of China’s giant Huawei, was arrested and is facing extradition to the United States.
China reiterated its demand for Meng’s release and expressed anger last week when the Canadian government approved the extradition proceedings.
Kufri used to enter China normally with a normal passport and work visas, “stealing and spying on sensitive information and secrets through a person in China,” the Central Committee for Political and Legal Affairs of China’s ruling Communist Party said in a short statement on its blog.
“He was the main person to whom Kufrij was related in China and handed him the secrets,” the statement said without elaborating.
Kufri violated Chinese laws and Beijing will begin taking legal action against him in due course, the statement said.
Canada says China does not associate the detention of Canadian citizens with Meng’s arrest, but former experts and diplomats say they have no doubt that China is using the two cases to pressure Ottawa.
