A spokesperson for the Catalan government said on Wednesday the region will declare independence and become a republic immediately in case the Spanish government decides to take away its autonomy, Deutsche Welle reported.

Earlier, Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria warned that the government in Madrid may invoke article 155 of the Constitution, which would suspend Catalonia’s autonomy, dissolve its parliament and intervene in the running of the region.

The Spanish government is holding an emergency meeting after Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont decided to delay the declaration of independence, despite the regional parliament signing a document on breaking away from Spain, and initiate talks with Madrid.
