Car struck pedestrians in Ukraine, at least 5 killed

At least five people were killed and six others were injured on Wednesday after a car struck pedestrians in Ukraine’s eastern city of Kharkiv, the National Police said.

According to the preliminary data, the accident occurred at 8:45 p.m. local time (GMT 1745), when an SUV car moved on a pavement and ploughed into pedestrians.

Local media reported later that two of the injured people are in critical condition.

The reason for the accident is not yet clear. Witnesses in local social media said that the SUV hit the pavement following a collision with another car.

The police said that it has opened a criminal case into the accident on charges of violation of road safety rules. The female driver has been detained.
