Britain’s finance minister is expected to reach an agreement with Labor on exit from the bloc

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Britain’s finance minister said on Saturday the government was optimistic that some form of agreement with the opposition Labor Party would come to an end to the EU exit stalemate as work on compromise continued.

But the Labor Party said the Conservative Party should be more flexible, adding that the ruling party had taken no step towards a political declaration of intentions regarding the future of the relationship between London and Brussels once Britain emerged from the European Union.

Prime Minister Theresa May asked European Union leaders to delay Britain’s exit from the bloc until June 30, but the EU insists that May should first offer a viable plan to secure agreement on its bloc exit plan, which has been rejected three times by the British parliament.

Hammond told reporters on Saturday he was optimistic about ending the stalemate.

“I am optimistic that we will reach some form of agreement with the Labor Party,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a meeting of finance ministers of EU member states in Bucharest, adding that he expected to exchange “more texts today.”

Hammond said the government had no red lines in the talks.

But Labor’s internal affairs spokeswoman said conservatives needed to show willingness to compromise on May’s red lines, which include ending Britain’s membership in the European Union’s customs union or the single market.

“There is no step from the government towards the actual concept of the political declaration, and that’s the key,” she told BBC Radio.

“Maybe the government has to show more flexibility than it has shown so far.”
