Britain says the Golan is illegally occupied by Israel

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The United Kingdom still considers the Golan Heights to be Syrian territory occupied by Israel, the British Foreign Office said Friday.

“The United Kingdom views the Golan Heights as occupied territory by Israel,” the British Foreign Office said in a statement issued on Thursday.

The British Foreign Office stressed that “the annexation of territory by force is prohibited under international law, including the Charter of the United Nations.”

“We did not recognize Israel’s annexation of the Golan in 1981 and we have no plans to change our position,” the ministry said.

Britain issued the statement on the backdrop of the announcement by the US President, on Thursday, that “the time has come to recognize the full sovereignty of Israel on the Golan,” in a move received only welcome by the Israeli government.

Since the June 1967 war, Israel has occupied about 1,200 square kilometers of the Syrian Golan Heights and annexed them in 1981, a move not recognized by the international community, while some 510 square kilometers remain under Syrian sovereignty.
