Britain rejects agreement with the EU on Brexit

Press conference by Britain's Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union David Davis and European Commission member in charge of Brexit negotiations with Britain, Michel Barnier at the European Commission in Brussels on Jul. , 2017

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — British parliamentarians rejected the Brexit agreement with the EU.

391 parliamentarians voted against the document, 242 parliamentarians voted in favor. Now parliamentarians have to vote on the issue of Brexit without an agreement.

Prime Minister Theresa May said that postponing Brexit does not solve the problem.

“The European Union will want to know what we want from such an extension. And the parliament must answer this question. Does it want to withdraw the application for secession from the EU? Wants to hold a second referendum? – noted the prime minister.

In January, the parliament has already rejected the document proposed by the government by an overwhelming majority, demanding changes to the part concerning the agreements on the Irish border.

British Prime Minister Teresa May and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced late on Monday that they had reached new agreements, but British Prosecutor General Jeffrey Cox said today that the guarantees received by the EU on the Irish border are insufficient from a legal point of view.

Thus, he essentially predetermined the outcome of today’s vote.

May promised that if the agreement is rejected tonight, then on Wednesday the parliamentarians will vote on the issue of leaving the country on March 29 without an agreement. If this option is rejected (which will happen for sure), then on Thursday the question of extending the Brexit term by two months will be raised.

However, the European Union has already stated that there will be no more negotiations, so the fate of Brexit is unclear at the moment.
