An extremely rare blue diamond, dubbed “Blue Moon Diamond”, sold Wednesday evening to Sotheby’s for 48.6 million Swiss francs ($ 48.4 million or $ 44.8 million ‘euros’), a world record for a gemstone sold at auction.

The purchaser is a national of Hong Kong.

The so-called “cushion” diamond, mounted on a ring and weighing 12.03 carats, was estimated before sale between $ 35 and $ 55 million.

The stone was auctioned as part of high jewelry sales in Geneva. The day before, a bright pink diamond left for the sum of 28.7 million Swiss francs (26.6 million euros, 28.6 million dollars) at a sale at Christie’s, home competitor Sotheby’s.
