Berlin to cut economic cooperation with Ankara over German detainees, Merkel

Germany is set to further pressure Turkey to release German nationals held behind bars by reducing economic cooperation, Chancellor Angela Merkel warned on Saturday, German media reports, citing her interview with Passauer Neuen Presse newspaper.

“We’ll have to reduce our economic cooperation with Turkey and to review our projects,” Merkel said, adding the government is doing everything possible to free German citizens.

There are currently 54 Germans held in detention in Turkey, according to numbers by the German Foreign Office, Der Spiegel reports.
