Arab League welcomes UN General Assembly resolution on occupied Jerusalem

The Arab League on Thursday welcomed the UN General Assembly resolution on the occupied city of Jerusalem, saying it “nullified any impact of the American decision and won Palestine, international legitimacy and the identity of Arab Jerusalem.”

The Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, “welcomed the result of the sweeping vote in the General Assembly of the United Nations against the decision of US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”

“The vote again reveals a state of full international consensus in support of the Palestinian right and contributes to the establishment of this right on the legal and moral level,” Aboul Gheit said.

“The vote unfortunately crystallizes the state of isolation in which the United States has placed itself without any understandable justification,” he said.

Aboul Gheit said that “the historic vote today is a victory for these values that underlie the international system.”

For his part, said Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League Said Abu Ali, the resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations “nullify any impact of the American decision, and won for Palestine and international legitimacy, and the identity of Arab Jerusalem.”

“This achievement and the new victory for Palestine will continue to be built upon and developed with this overwhelming majority of the world,” he said. “Together we will embody the will of the international community to achieve the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.”

He pointed out that “Jerusalem in accordance with the Security Council resolutions is part of the occupied Palestinian territory,” stressing “the importance of continuing collective and coordinated Arab action with fraternal and friendly countries and international organizations to end the Israeli occupation and enable the Palestinian state sovereignty and independence.”

For his part, Spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Mahmoud Afifi, said that “the next phase will witness intensive and concerted Arab action in order to stabilize the international consensus that rejects the American decision and to address the negative consequences of this decision.”

He pointed out that “the Arab Ministerial Committee on this subject will hold its first meetings in the near future to consider the next steps, which builds on the state of overwhelming international support for the Palestinian position.”

The United Nations General Assembly adopted earlier today a decision to cancel the announcement of US President Donald Trump, on the sixth of this month Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

A total of 128 countries voted in favor, while 9 abstained and 35 abstained.

The decision came despite Trump’s threat on Wednesday to cut off US aid from the countries that would vote for him.
