UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The Syrian Arab Army and the National Defense Forces (FND) continue to scramble to clear the desert of Homs-Deir ez-Zor and the northwestern part of the province of Sueida from the Daesh cells operating there.
Most recently, FND members spotted a terrorist unit north of Sueida. However, they failed to eliminate it. The unit was conducting reconnaissance operations in the area, probably collecting data for future attacks on FND and Syrian Army positions in the province, reports South Front.
A previously announced security operation in the area of the Al-Bukamal-T2-Mayadin pumping station triangle also yielded little results. Syrian army units carried out a series of raids. At the same time, they do not have the resources to establish a complex network of control points in this desert area. Thus, terrorist cells can always come back.
According to local sources, there are currently between 400 and 800 Daesh members in the desert areas of central Syria. Most of them are hiding in the desert of Homs-Deir ez-Zor and in the vicinity of the American-controlled area of al-Tanf.
This terrorist organization poses a significant threat to the security of government-controlled areas in the provinces of Homs, Deir ez-Zor and Soueïda.
Another major problem is the al-Rukban refugee camp, located near the US al-Tanf garrison. The camp is not only the scene of an acute humanitarian crisis, it is also a gathering place for various criminal gangs and terrorists hidden in the region. The location of the camp allows them to use it as a base for operations in the border area. According to local sources, at least some of the “moderate rebels” deployed nearby are actually former or current members of Daesh.
