At least eight pro-Taliban militants were killed and six wounded after a series of operations by Afghan forces in the northern province of Kunduz, a local official said on Thursday.

The operation was launched in the village of Sufi in the restive district of Chardara last night and lasted for hours, killing eight militants, said Gholam Hazrat Karimi, a spokesman for the Bamir 20 military battalion in the northern region.

Six others were wounded.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed to the media that the clash had occurred and claimed that 11 government soldiers had been killed in the incident, which Karimi described as baseless.
