Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday rejected US President Donald Trump’s proposal for peace with Israel after his decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Abbas said in a speech during the opening of the meetings of the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization in the West Bank city of Ramallah, “We said no to trampe and will not accept his project, and the deal of the era is the slap of the times and will not accept.”
“We are at a critical moment and our future is at stake because of the American decision on Jerusalem,” he said, referring to Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state.
On December 6, Trump announced the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the transfer of his country’s embassy to it, which met with angry Arab, Arab and international reactions.
The Palestinians want to declare the eastern part of Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. Israel insists that unified Jerusalem be its capital, although it occupied the eastern part of the holy city in 1967 and the international community did not recognize it.
Jerusalem is one of the final status issues for Palestinian-Israeli negotiations stalled since 2014 after nine months of US-sponsored talks without progress to resolve the decades-old conflict.
“The time has come for the central council representing the Palestinian National Council, which took the decision to establish the Palestinian Authority as the nucleus of the state, to decide its future and function, and to reconsider the issue of recognizing the State of Israel,” Palestinian National Council Speaker Salim al-Za’noun said in a speech. To recognize the state of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital. ”
Al-Zanoun proposed to the Palestinian Central Council to dedicate the legal status of the State of Palestine by preparing a plan to transfer the functions of the Palestinian Authority to the functions of the State and to deal with the Palestinian National Council as the Parliament of the State of Palestine.
He urged “to complete the discussion of the draft constitution of the State of Palestine, and return it to the Central Council for approval, after its presentation to the Palestinian public opinion, and in light of which the elections of the presidency and the parliament are held.”
Al-Zanoun called on the United Nations General Assembly to unite for peace to end the Israeli occupation of the State of Palestine as a duty for the United Nations and to complete the work for the full membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations.
He stressed the need to proceed with diplomatic, legal and judicial action by acceding to international treaties and conventions, and to bring legal proceedings against the occupation before the International Criminal Court.
Al-Zanoun also proposed to the Central Council to prepare for the regular session of the Palestinian National Council with the call of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the Islamic Jihad to participate in it, whose first task is to reshape, choose or elect a new National Council.
