5 European countries pledge to share Open Arms emigrants

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Five member states of the European Union have decided to share irregular migrants stranded in the humanitarian ship “Open Arms”, 19 days ago.

The European Commission spokeswoman died Ernst, in a press statement Wednesday, that Spain, France, Germany, Portugal and Luxembourg, pledged to receive migrants stranded in the ship.

Ernst added that the sharing of irregular migrants would take several days, and that UNHCR would do everything possible to get the countries involved to speed up the reception process.

The Spanish NGO Proactiva Open Arms has been waiting for 19 days in international waters near the Italian island of Lampedusa, carrying 121 rescued migrants in the Mediterranean, after Spain and Malta refused to accept the ship.

The organization said in a statement published on the “Twitter”, that the ship rescued 39 additional migrants while waiting at sea, and the number of migrants on board became 160 people.

She added that the new immigrants are citizens of Syria, Sudan and Maghreb countries.

The organization called on EU countries to provide an “immediate safe port” for 160 irregular migrants.

On Wednesday, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini threatened to seize the rescue organization of the Spanish organization once it enters its territorial waters.

“I would like to remind Open Arms that Italian waters are closed and we are ready to detain the ship,” he said in a tweet.
