UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The secret laboratory in Porton Down, England, has killed 48,400 animals to carry out its experiments from 2010 to 2017, said The Sunday Mirror. The animals were exploded, gassed and poisoned, according to the newspaper.
Nearly 48,400 animals, including pigs, monkeys and guinea pigs, were killed during experiments between 2010 and 2017 at the Porton Down Secret Lab located next to Salisbury, the town where Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia was poisoned, the British newspaper The Sunday Mirror announced.
The experiments were conducted at a government military research facility, the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), within Porton Down, the newspaper said.
The Sunday Mirror investigation revealed that scientists had detonated, gassed and poisoned animals as part of the defense research program at the Ministry of Defense.
The British Ministry of Defense supports this practice claiming that these studies help doctors save the lives of British soldiers, it says.
The pigs were slaughtered during experiments designed to develop more effective body protection for troops sent to Iraq and Afghanistan.
However, animal rights advocates condemn experiments. According to the Animal Aid Association quoted by the newspaper, “deliberately exposing live animals to compounds, simulated explosions and biological pathogens, […] causing extreme suffering and death is unacceptable from the point of view of morality.”
The Porton Down Lab became famous in 2018 after the poisoning of former Russian GRU officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia at Salisbury. The laboratory performed tests to determine which nerve agent had been used.
Researchers at the British Porton Down Laboratory admitted that they were unable to establish the home country of the innervating agent used in the assassination attempt. The Russian government has repeatedly asked London to allow it to participate in this investigation.
