A tropical cyclone that has swept the Indonesian island of Java in recent days has killed 41 people and displaced thousands, local authorities said Wednesday.

Of the 41 people killed, 25 died in a single land slide last week in the east of the island, the Natural Disaster Management Agency said. The previous toll was 19 dead.

Some 28,000 people have been displaced as a result of these weather conditions in Java, the most populous island in Indonesia, causing substantial material damage.

“At least 5,000 homes have been destroyed and more than 3,000 flooded,” said spokeswoman Sutobu Boro Nugroho.

In recent months, the island of Java has been hit by bad weather. Causing floods and landslides that killed at least 30 people in September, west of the island.
