LIBYA (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Fourteen people have been killed and 614 wounded in the attack on the Libyan capital on April 4, according to a new report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday.
More than 18,000 people have been displaced by the fighting, with 6,000 of them receiving aid, the United Nations humanitarian coordination office said.
Heavy fighting has been taking place since April 4 in the southern suburb of Tripoli between the internationally recognized forces of the Accord and the forces of Marshal Khalifa Haftar al-Said to control the capital, the headquarters of the government of the Accord.
The United Nations on Monday called on all parties to show restraint and avoid targeting hospitals, ambulances and medical personnel.
The organization said it had deployed teams of surgeons in hospitals to cope with the injured “flow”.
For its part, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that its team in Libya handed over to the Ministry of Health urgent medical equipment to provide assistance to victims in the most affected areas, especially Ain Zara and Ben Ghashir Palace south of the capital Tripoli.
“As the situation on the ground deteriorates and the number of casualties increases, medical infrastructure is badly needed to help.”
In addition to the battles on the ground, the parties to the conflict carry out daily air strikes and are accused of targeting civilians.
Al-Wefaq forces said on Sunday they had shot down a Hafar fighter.
While a source in Haftar’s forces confirmed the loss of the plane, it indicated that its fall was due to a “technical failure”.
