UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Fourteen people were killed in armed clashes on Saturday in a refugee camp in the Darfur region, the official SUNA news agency reported.

The agency quoted the governor of South Darfur, Major-General Hashim Khalid, as saying that “clashes took place inside Camp Kalma for the displaced, killing 14 innocent displaced persons.”

The official did not explain the cause of the clashes or the groups in which he took part, but said that “the camp is full of weapons and became a focus of the security chaos affected by the state.”

He added that the camp also includes many SLA rebels – Abdel Wahed Nur wing, one of the armed groups that have been fighting the Khartoum forces for years.

The statement was made by Major General Khalid, according to SUNA, during a meeting with a delegation from the United Nations Mission and the African Union in Sudan, “UNAMID”.

“The UNAMID mission in the state is based on the order of the camp and the state government is not allowed to enter it,” the Sudanese official said, adding that his meeting with UNAMID was aimed at “putting an end to the pogroms and all actions within the camp and discussing the issue of the camp. Waiver to the state government to do its duty towards the camp and secure the displaced.”

Since 2003, the vast territory in western Sudan, which is the size of France, has witnessed an armed conflict between the Khartoum forces on the one hand and rebels from ethnic minorities who accuse the Bashir regime of marginalization.

The war in the province has left more than 300,000 dead and 2.5 million homeless, according to the United Nations.
