Over 30 people were poisoned with homemade alcohol in the Dominican Republic, 12 of them died. This was reported on Tuesday by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Caribbean.
The tragedy occurred in the western province of Elias-Pina, bordering Haiti. 32 people received poisoning with rum containing a large amount of methanol. According to the authorities, a sugar cane drink was bought in the Haitian town of Los Cocoa.
The Dominican Ministry of Health warned citizens of the need to refrain from using all kinds of homemade alcohol.
Currently, the authorities are trying to establish who sold the poisonous drink to people. So far no arrests have been made. According to preliminary information, several people died in Haiti as a result of poisoning with the same alcohol.
